Sift the flour and baking powder together to add air. Make a well in the middle and put in the sugar, vanilla and the eggs. Stir until combined to a pudding. Add the butter cut into pieces, cover with the flour and mix everything to a smooth dough. Add chopped hazel nuts for a variation. (Nusstaler) Roll out the dough and cut into shapes or form into rolls and refrigerate overnight. The rolls should be about 30 - 35mm diameter. Cut off 8 - 10mm slices and bake at 190°C, 375°F. Notes: Use castor sugar, or beat with the eggs to dissolve the sugar. I soften the butter in the microwave oven and mix it with the eggs, it makes mixing the dough very much quicker and easier. For Nusstaler, I substitute half of the flour with an equal quantity of ground hazel nuts.
